WATCH OUT FOR WORMS!
We have been called to see a number of very poorly horses with signs of high worm burdens over the last few weeks.
Winter and early spring is the risk period for larval cyathostomiasis, a disease caused by the emergence of hibernating small redworms from the gut wall. Young horses are most at risk and the clinical signs include sudden weight loss and diarrhoea. A regular worming programme and good pasture management are vital in controlling this disease. Ask our vets for more information.
For more information, contact cecilia@cornerhousevets.com.

You may notice hundreds of tiny red worms in your horses droppings (the poo)

Signs in horses include weight loss, a poor coat, diarrhoea and a bloated stomach.
JANUARY 2012
Happy new year to all our valued clients !
We hope we can be of help to you over the coming year, whether it is with one of our reduced price zone visits, our winter special offers, a bit of advice, one of open evenings or lectures, poor performance investigation or major surgery...we are here to help!
DECEMBER 2011
Happy Christmas to one and all, we hope you received our post card with updated news about our zone visit scheme and also our three special offers for the winter period.
Watch this video below see how a breathing noise is investigated in a high level show horse. For more information and some photos, please see our Facebook Page.
NOVEMBER 2011
This week we have had our cuddliest pony of the year...16 year old Pippin was referred in to us by a very good local mixed practice who were called to see him as an emergency with a big hole in the front of his eye.
The owners think he may have damaged it on a blackthorn. Unfortunately, his eye was too bad to save and so poor Pippin underwent a two hour op on Wednesday evening to remove his left eye.
By the next morning he was bright and chipper again and today was being hand-grazed prior to returning home tomorrow.
Zoe our groom taking Pippin for a stroll to get some grass and get used to walking with only his right eye, he was a little spooky to start with but is improving daily.
OCTOBER 2011
We have a new section on our website that allows clients to print off information that has been researched and written by vets on a wide range of subjects, click here to find out more.
Kim is getting married this weekend so good luck to her and her new husband to be Jake and we look forward to seeing her back at work late January.
SEPTEMBER 2011
September has been our busiest month ever in the twelve years we have been open! The zone visits are proving extremely popular but have been causing a few administration problems as people sometimes don't realise that we can't give even an idea of time until the evening before and then they forget to ring for their time....but slowly things are running more smoothly now and office stress levels are dropping!
The rescue ponies have gone to new homes in Belbroughton, hurrah! Many thanks to one of our clients who transported them there :) We hope they will make great kids ponies.
AUGUST 2011

August is a month where us vets traditionally try to get a bit of holiday in as it tends to be quieter with all the schools off and the locals in the South of France, but this August has been crazy!! Cecilia our newest team member has been rushed off her feet, her sat-nav is nearly worn out! We have rehomed one youngster and the other three are now halter broken and can have their feet picked up and trimmed (after a few bruises initially to the handlers involved!), so roll up if you can offer a good home!
JULY 2011
Our client lecture evening on 14 th July went really well, with 98 attendees we raised money for both charities we were supporting. The lecture itself by Andy Durham MRCVS on cushings and metabolic syndrome was very informative and made many of us think about how we feed and look after horses and ponies.
July has been a busy month for everyone at corner house, our ponies who have been gelded now have gone for a holiday to Astwood Bank to learn to pick their feet up, be led and be caught and are now ready to be rehomed (don't all rush at once!!).
Congratulations to Kate who got engaged in July to Anthony , spot the dazzler on a zone visit near you !
JUNE 2011
This month has been busy with fertility work, frozen AI is popular but is proving tricky this year. The mares just don't seem to want to play ball; they are ovulating in a delayed fashion or not ovulating at all.... we suspect that this may be to do with the hot spring followed by very cool weather; seasons in mares are strongly dependent on what time of year it is and the way this is judged by the mare is by the weather.
Our 'new client' evening on the 16th of June was well attended, Ed did his usual demonstration of the emasculators (the instrument we use for castration) with a carrot; much to his own amusement!
We seem to be doing a lot of pre-purchase examinations at the moment with horses being sold from the Midlands all over the country; cobs seem to be in especially high demand.
More news soon!
MAY 2011
CLIENT EVENING TALK 14TH JULY - DOWNLOAD THE FLYER HERE
May has been a busy month, thank goodness for our new vet! Cecilia has been with us for 6 weeks now and has settled in really well. The skills she picked up in Australia are standing her in good stead for dealing with all the colics and emergencies she is sent to!
We are currently sending out invitations for our new client evenings so we hope to see a few of you there in July. Our main client talk has been advertised this week in the Horse and Hound and there are 150 tickets available at £5 each which include a drink. The subject of the talk is cushings disease and metabolic syndrome - the event takes place on July 14th at Henley Golf and Country Club, please call us if you wish to buy tickets.
The rescue dartmoor hill ponies are looking brilliant ( but still not gelded !!) see photo below.
APRIL 2011
Kim had a beautiful baby boy! After three days of pushing and a Caesarian, Riley was born at the beginning of April - congratulations (and come back soon!)
Our Farrier, Physio and Trainer evening went well with Bryan Omeara MRCVS taking us on an amusing gallop through performance problems. There was music, jokes, videos and Henley Golf Club also played some Tiger Woods commentary over the slides in error! No one seemed to mind, the chilli went down well and a few farriers were left propping the bar up at the end! Thanks to everyone for coming, 49 out of 54 people turned up and thanks to the golf club for a lovely meal.
The first week of April has been very busy, thank goodness our new vet Cecilia (CC for short) starts tomorrow!
The 'Corner House Rescue' dartmoor hill ponies are looking better, their constant rearing, nipping, and beating up of our poor ram tells us they will be heading for a little operation each soon (as soon as we can catch them......)
MARCH 2011
Mandy Jerrom started in the office to replace Kim who has left to have her baby. Good luck to Kim who we think will be a great mum! We hope to see her back in the office in the new year! Mandy has settled in well and is coping with her wide range of duties, from helping to plan our Farrier and Physio meeting (April 7th) to mucking out and trotting up horses.
Our quarterly new client evening went well on 10th March, with a very knowledgeable client scoring 9.5/10 on the quiz! We run these every three months so please ring if you would like to come and challenge the new high score!
Our Farrier, Physio and Trainer meeting is filling up fast, if you would like your trainer, farrier or Physio to be invited please let us know by email or phone.
We have found a new vet who will be starting with us in mid April. Out of the 23 applicants received we interviewed 6 and eventually settled on Cecilia, who is a London 2009 graduate. Cecilia has worked for a year as an intern at the largest equine clinic in Australia (Scone), so will be extremely useful to us in the clinic and she will be out and about meeting all our clients shortly on zone visits.
FOUR COLTS ARRIVE - FEBRUARY 2011
The beginning of February brought the unexpected delivery of four 7 month old Dartmoor Hill pony colts to the clinic, no-one else was willing to have them and incur the cost of castration so they ended up with us to keep the sheep company.
They have had their first vaccination and wormer and will be gelded once we can handle them! All being well they will gradually be rehomed (this is our charity bit for this year !)
February so far has been enormously busy, zone visits are extremely popular now; some days we need to assign two vets to cover all the calls - our clients obviously have a keen eye for a bargain!
On 7th April we'll be holding our professionals meeting for farriers, physiotherapists and trainers. The event takes place at Henley Golf Club, where we will offer a free (invitation only) dinner and a lecture, so if you think your farrier, physio or trainer would enjoy a night out - let us know.
EXTRA VET NEEDED
We started the unenviable task today of trying to find another vet to provide cover over the busy spring / summer / autumn period when the other vets are on annual leave or on courses . We are pretty fussy and have advertised for someone experienced and friendly, with a great personality and good attention to detail....so watch this space for news of our new team member!
A BUSY NEW YEAR - JANUARY 2010
Happy new year to all our valued clients!
December came to a virtual standstill with two weeks of snow causing lots of surgery to be cancelled or postponed and vets getting stuck down various country lanes! One day we were forced to cancel all calls apart from emergencies and worked with a skeleton staff in the office which included staff walking up and down our long drive in wellies - the water even froze inside the stables!
January has started with a bang, we have had the busiest start to a year we have ever had and think perhaps people are catching up on work they planned for December. You may have noticed the series of ads that we at cornerhousevets have organised for twenty equine vets around the country - the latest was in the first issue of Horse and Hound of 2011 and offered ten percent off all dental work done and paid for in January and February 2011 upon the mention of the ad, there is also an article covering dental care.
We'll have more news to follow about open evenings this year, these are being arranged by Angela and Ed in the next week so watch this space!
OPEN EVENINGS - NOVEMBER 2010
We have 7 open evenings and meetings planned for the 12 months, kicking off with a young farmer's night in November. We have a new client evening every three months in order to give clients who haven't had the opportunity to visit the clinic to have a look around and meet our team.
If you would like to come along (even if you have been registered for years!), please speak to Kim in our office.
Other nights we have planned include a technical talk for farriers, physiotherapists and trainers (early 2011) and a general talk which all of our clients are invited to attend, we hope to see you there!
SURGERY - NOVEMBER 2010
November has been a record month for us so far for surgery. We have three surgeons who visit regularly and specialise in areas such as orthopaedic, upper respiratory tract and keyhole surgery. We have seen all three surgeons this month and would like to report that a whacky sense of humour and bad jokes are common amongst that rare breed of vet!! The other surgeries are undertaken by our in-house veterinary surgeons.
Our groom Zoe, our vet nurse Claire and our anaesthetist Kate Sutton MRCVS have been working extra hard to ensure all the patients get the individual attention that they need.
CREDIT CRUNCH: The free zone visit days are very popular and are booked up sometimes weeks in advance. When requiring routine work e.g. vaccinations and dental work it is worthwhile using the scheme as it can represent up to a 50% reduction in your bill.
If the zone visit day does not suit it is worth trying to organise a shared visit with other people on your yard.
DOES YOUR HORSE NEED A MICRO CHIP?: New legislation requires that all equids born after 1st July 2009 will need a microchip to have a passport. Horses born before that date requiring a new passport will also need to be micro chipped.
